Subbie meaning

What does Subbie mean?
Subbie is an informal shorthand used in legal and commercial practice to mean a subcontractor (also written sub-contractor) — an entity engaged by a main contractor, or by another subcontractor, to perform part of the works or to supply labour, plant or materials on a project. It is not a defined term in legislation or case law; it is a descriptive expression used across construction, engineering, facilities management and fit-out procurement. A subbie contracts with the appointing contractor under a subcontract and ordinarily has no direct contractual relationship with the employer, unless collateral warranties or third-party rights are granted. Typical issues include scope allocation, design responsibility, programme, risk transfer, indemnities, insurance and retention. Statutory regimes on payment and adjudication apply at sub-contract level: the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 (as amended) in England and Wales and Scotland; the Construction Contracts (Northern Ireland) Order 1997; and the Construction Contracts Act 2013 in Ireland. These regulate payment notices, pay less notices and largely prohibit pay-when-paid clauses (subject to insolvency exceptions). Usage is broadly consistent across England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland, and covers lower-tier participants (e.g. sub-subcontractors) within the construction supply chain.
