Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services meaning

What does Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services mean?
Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services are online platforms where consumers pay a recurring fee (monthly or annual) to access a catalogue of audiovisual content on demand, rather than at a scheduled broadcast time. In legal practice, SVOD is a descriptive term; UK and Irish law regulate these services as on-demand programme services/on-demand audiovisual media services, not by reference to “SVOD”. Usage is broadly consistent across the UK and Ireland. Key legal features include payment for continuing access, user-initiated selection, rolling renewal and cancellation typically effective at the end of the billing period. “Cancel any time” claims are constrained by consumer law and any agreed minimum term or promotional commitment. In the UK, Ofcom oversees on-demand programme services under the Communications Act 2003 (as amended by Audiovisual Media Services Regulations 2020), including standards on harmful material, protection of minors and information duties. In Ireland, comparable rules apply under the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act 2022, enforced by Coimisiún na Meán. Common legal issues include pre-contract information, cooling-off rights and auto-renewals (UK: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013; Consumer Rights Act 2015; forthcoming Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024; Ireland: Consumer Rights Act 2022), and data protection (UK/EU GDPR).
