Spring Statement 2025—key International Trade announcements

In the Spring Statement on 26 March 2025, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP, set out measures pertinent to International Trade practitioners, including temporary tariff reliefs on selected goods, progress towards a modern and effective tax and customs framework, and the financial implications of tariff liberalisation under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. WTO announces Canada's request for consultations with China over GATT violations

On 24 March 2025, the World Trade Organization noted that Canada has begun formal dispute consultations with the People’s Republic of China regarding alleged breaches of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 and the Dispute Settlement Understanding. Filed as WT/DS636/1, the dispute moves into a mandatory 60-day consultation window, after which Canada may pursue a panel should bilateral engagement not yield a resolution. This Practice Note This Practice Note reviews mechanisms used in settling litigation. A Tomlin order consists of a consent order paired with a schedule. It operates to stay proceedings on terms that have been agreed. The provisions contained in the schedule may remain confidential. This Practice Note describes the scope of confidentiality attaching to the schedule and sets out how it differs from a standard consent order.
