A contract of employment is the agreement under which an employee personally performs work for an employer in return for pay and benefits, setting the terms that govern that relationship. In England and Wales and Scotland, it is defined by statute (Employment Rights Act 1996, s.230(2)) as a contract of service or apprenticeship, whether express or implied, oral or in writing; Northern Ireland uses equivalent wording (Employment Rights (Northern Ireland) Order 1996). 1 Purpose and scope of the procedure

  1. 1.1 A grievance is any worry, issue or complaint an employee brings to their employer.
  2. 1.2 Where appropriate, you should first try to resolve a grievance informally with the person you report to directly [ or [ insert alternative, eg the HR Department ] ]. If this does not settle the matter, you should submit your grievance formally as outlined below.
  3. 1.3 This procedure is not incorporated into your Contract of employment. It can be changed at any time and the Company may adopt a different procedure depending on the circumstances of the particular case.
