What does Controller mean? In data protection practice, a controller is the organisation or individual that decides why and how personal data are processed. The term is defined in legislation (UK GDPR in the UK and EU GDPR in Ireland, supplemented by the UK Data Protection Act 2018 and the Irish Data Protection Act 2018). A controller is any natural or legal person, public authority, agency or other body which, alone or jointly with others, determines the purposes and means of the processing of personal data.
